Realistic Abstracts

I just received a book I ordered form Amazon.com titled ‘Realistic Abstracts” by Kees van Aalst. The title is a bit of a contradiction in terms, but it is a lovely little book with a wonderful section on design. As a southern American, I have a little difficulty with Kees wording, but as a reader of images, I manage to understand what he is saying when I compare the illustrations with the words.

I am eager to play with some of Kees suggestions, but they will have to wait for now. I have a writing project that is joyfully consuming all of my time. I have been told (I know “have been” is a passive voice, is there anything wrong with that?) not to mention my project to anyone, as it will take the steam out of my sails. I hope that I have not said too much as it is, but I wanted to offer my excuse for not posting that often.

  1. Good luck with your writing project (could it be a book, an autobiography?! Keep those sails full!) I am always happy when I see a new post by you.

  4. Hi Carole and Padmaja. Thanks for commenting.I'm enjoying the book. Most of the examples are of boats and buildings.Lots of little shapes and line work. The cover is a bit deceiving as it wasn't painted by the author.I think the design section is the best part of the book.

  5. The book looks like fun. I just bought "expressive drawing " by steve aimone (as a consolation for not taking his $750 workshop). Who can resist art books!

Looking forward to hearing about your project when it ripens!

  6. Steve's book is wonderful and I believe the AARP still has his online workshop up. Not like the real thing, but as you said $750 is hard to come by. Then you have to add transportation, room and board. Wayyyy out of my budget!
    Thanks for commenting.

  7. Hi Eva - You and I communicated by email about this book after I commented on Amazon. I enjoyed so much your email, then I went on a couple of trips and got very distracted by a number of things and didn't respond. I wanted to say how much I enjoy your work, how much I appreciated your looking at my paintings which I sent scans of by email and all the kind things you said. I will follow you on your lovely blog. And, I'm so happy you bought the book - I think it is so beautiful. Be well and happy. Reba
