'Mending' watercolor on Yupo 15"x 24" Eva Macie ©
At the risk of becoming a bore about my eye surgery, I will update you about it. In brief, I am mending, but because of some issues I am unhappy with, such as flickering, reflections and a change in the appearance of my eye, I cancelled the surgery on the other one. I have an appointment in July to reevaluate my decision.
I do not have any new art to post so I am showing an older painting I did on Yupo which I recently made some minor revisions. Maybe it is my state of mind, but the colors are not very pleasing to me. I desaturated the color in Photoshop and I think I prefer the grayscale version better. At least the values and the composition work for me. Artists today are so fortunate to be able to use software to do this. In my younger days, the only option we had to view the painting in gray scale was with red and green cellophane (acetate) to see the values or take a picture and wait a week for it to be developed! I cannot imagine where I would be as an artist today if I had all the tools I have now or even the materials such as Yupo.
Beautiful day today and I have errands to do. There is another big storm headed our way, which always upsets me. We have so many big trees next to the house and I have had two fall since I’ve been here. Not sure, what all of the awful recent natural catastrophes are all about, but maybe the Aztecs knew something when their calendar ended in 2012. *0*
I am sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time after your surgery. I hope things will get better quickly for you. Thanks for the update.
ReplyDeleteIt might just be your state of mind as I find the colours in "Mending" quite stimulating!
Take care.
I am also sorry to hear you cancelled the surgery on your other eye but I am sure you know what makes the best sense for your body. I prefer the colorful first version but maybe the patterns combined with color is too busy for your eye to focus. It really is amazing that technology has become essential and helpful in the art making process.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better soon.
Robin
I agree that sometimes the colors can distract, grate on one's nerves, so shifting to grayscale helps, cleanses the palette in a way. I wish you a speedy recovery, Eva!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for your support and comments.
ReplyDeleteMy state of mind as you can tell has not been the best lately, but I felt I needed to post something. I hope I didn't bring everyone down.
Interesting post. It's nice to look at the two side-by-side; I can check my squinting ability on the colored one. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think any surgery saps energy and messes with the mind. There's something unsettling about putting your life (or eyes) in someone else's hands. Be well.
I agree Hallie, it takes me quite awhile to bounce back. That's another reason I'm, not in a rush to do the other eye. Thanks for you comments.
ReplyDeleteI like both grayscale and the color piece. I agree the software informs the artist in whole new ways...a true short cut in art making. Best to you in this recovery.
ReplyDeleteI like both, but I actually prefer the color. The might just be though and general love of bright colors in everything
ReplyDeleteThe colored version is looking very attractive but the black and white made it more interesting for studying the subtle variations in the tones.. good that you posted them.. yes, sometimes our patience is tested, it is hard.. but I am sure, the vision gets better..take care Eva.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary Ann, Sarah-Anne and Padmja for your comments. After doing the grayscale, I may try it on all of my paintings that I have on my computer(someday):O)
ReplyDeleteLove the grayscale. Glorious to see the two side by side.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about your vision issues...mend mend mend.
Hi Donna, thank you for your comments. My eyes are mending :O)
ReplyDeleteWhat if you were to compromise a little bit -- something in between totally grayscale and full-on color? In Photoshop, duplicate your color layer, turn the duplicate layer to grayscale, and then use the opacity slider to let just a little bit of the color through from the layer underneath. You can slide the slider a little or a lot, depending on the look you want.
ReplyDeleteWishing you well with your eyes. I can't begin to imagine what you're going through.

Thank you Carol for you great suggestion and support. Yes, I could have done that, as I play with images in Photoshop all of the time, but I wanted to see how it looked as a total grayscale image :o)
ReplyDeleteMy eye is really better. I'm going for my new glasses next week. Thanks again
Eva
I love the colors in this....but then I love reds and turquoise together.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy. Since my vision has improved the colors don't bother me now. I must have like them to choose them in the first place :O)
