Living with Expressive Art

                                                                          © decorpad.com
One of the comments on my last post about ‘Stacked Calligraphy’ was a question about displaying this type of art in a living room. I was a little surprised, as I believe one can display any type of art anywhere in their home. I personally have almost every type of art in every room in my home.
One of my abstract expressionist pieces, ‘Neptune’s Song’ (at the right) hangs in my living room. The colors and movement enliven the space and always command the attention of my visitors.

A quick search of the internet will yield many beautiful rooms that display abstract art. The two rooms that are not mine can be found at http://www.decorpad.com/photo.htm?photoId=1681 and http://designindulgences.com/2011/05/11/iwant-abstract-art/
Enjoy!

  1. I agree about displaying art in any way that works for the owner of the art. "Neptune's Song" truly is alive with movement (that's one of the things I am working on right now) and the colors are fabulous! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thanks Robin. I think too many people worry about the opinion of others. I believe our art and decor says a lot about who we are. If we give our choices over to the opinions of others we are giving up something of ourselves.

  3. An artist creates what he/she believes in and that means that the creation is part of his/her soul. When we worry about opinions, we tend to restrict creativity.. but perceptions are always interesting :-)
I loved your Neptunes's song, it is very dramatic, making that corner get extra attention.

  4. Your painting Neptune's Song is beautiful and the furniture is as well...a mood complete. The other photos express the same idea that art and decor can't help but compliment. My home is a mix of mine and art I have collected and I feel great in this atmosphere of my living walls...fun to change it up sometimes too!

  5. >Thank you padmaja. I agree with everything you wrote about the opinion of others:O)

    >Mary Anne, you are so kind. The furniture is an antique art deco bar from England that I bought at a flea market. It has wonderful hidden draws on the side with all the things needed to store bottles, tools and/or prepare cocktails ;-)

  6. We have all sorts of art throughout our house. I like the look of abstract art with antique furniture. It actually brings life to a room that could look like a museum.

  7. Hi Carole. I agree that mixing styles adds life to a room. I love all periods and styles of furniture and art so my home is very eclectic.

  8. Mine too Eva! When my girls were teenagers they always wanted to live in a beige house with a beige mother like all their friends houses and mothers....ha ha. Now they decorate their own places with colour and art!

  9. For whatever reason I am a lover of abstract art. and it is fun, surprising and a little edgy, which I love, to place traditional furniture with abstract art. I think it makes both really pop. It has a nice tension which wakes us up.

  10. We have both antiques and modern furniture in our house, and several pieces of abstract art, as well as art that isn't abstract, but I would hardly call it "traditional." We're about to put a track light in the hall so it can be real "gallery" space and not just a "spare place" to hang art. I can't imagine wondering whether it's "right" to hang abstract art in a room!

"Neptune's Song" is quite nice, by the way.

  11. Hi Diane, sounds like you and I are on the same "track'. I also have track lighting in my 'gallery' hallway. Like most artist all wall space is an opportunity to display art! Thanks for commenting.
