Yupo Eclipsed

I spent so much time standing lost in the fascination of watercolor on Yupo, that my legs could not take it anymore! This really eclipsed my painting time. My studio is located in my basement, which has concrete floors. I have a small padded rug in front of my art table. It has always seemed sufficient, but I guess my old age has caught up with me. Now any amount of time standing there turns into to pure torture. I have tried sitting, but I cannot get the fluid motion I want. I am going to try some of those interlocking rubber pads, but in the mean time, I have created a small platform from a door scrap. (I cut up doors for art panels.) Although it creates other problems, ie, table height and inadvertently stepping off it, I hope the platform will do the trick.

The painting above is the last painting I created before I had to surrender to my legs. I titled it Eclipsed, which seemed to fit the painting and the current situation. I used a limited palette again and my usual cruciform, axial obvious format. The energy of the ocean and other moving water has always been my favorite subject matter. Although I was not consciously aware of it at the time, I believe being horrified by the oil disaster in the Gulf, has influenced my work.

  1. Sorry to read about your working conditions...I have some of those interlocking rubber floor cushions but I have still a shorter window of work time than a few years ago.
This piece with that lone black line is strong and does speak of this oil tragedy...painful.

  2. Yes, Mary Ann, anyone who looks forward to retiring and old age has a surprise coming! As for the oil spill, I'm just as upset with how it's being handled.

  3. Beautiful piece Eva! This is a tremendous composition and I love the limited palette. I agree, it makes a statement about the current situation in the gulf. Hang in there girl, I know what you mean about not being able to sit and paint; there's no gesture and shapes and lines look funky because I'm not using my entire body. Be careful on that platform!

  4. Eva -- Such a strong, fluid movement in this piece, and the monochromatic use of color seems to make it even stronger -- love it! Libraries and office catalogs carry those thick rubber mats especially for staff that stand for long periods of time; some are several inches thick and very cushiony. Perhaps that would help? With all these gray cells here in blogland, we'll think of something!

  5. Stan, thanks for your comment. As for standing when painting, for years my work was very large scale so I got into the habit of standing. Love that body motion!I'm not sure the platform will last that long:O)

Kelly, I appreciate your comments and the tips on where to look for mats. I'll check them out. I think Sam's Club carries some.

  6. nice.....
you need inserts for your shoes and firm padding for the concrete floors if all else fails use a stool that adjusts to height and swivels... it might help with the motion
    nice work

  8. First I love this painting! And secondly I agree. I need to stand so I can reach and move and can not tolerate standing long on concrete. My new studio is second story avoiding the concrete floors. Right now I am standing on concrete and my working time is limited. I like the platform idea. I am thinking of getting gel insoles too.

  9. Beautiful piece Eva...you made something so luscious in your use of grisaille with such elegant line patterning. you don't post the size but it feels both spacious and imtimate at once.

I too stand on concrete and have a large painting wall where I find placing the interlocking mats to be a help...I like the idea of the gell insoles too...smart.

  10. Lovely art Eva,with a limited palette, you created something very elegant, though I can feel the way your body let you down through those strokes here.

  11. I really like this piece Eva and I agree with the others sbout the limited palette. I must take the time to try out Yuppo as the effects look so interesting. I always stand to paint too. What you may find helps, along with the rubber or gel mats are support stockings. I have some very strong ones that I wear if I am doing a lot of standing and they really help. Surgeons wear them to operate for the same reason and to prevent blood clots.

  12. >Leslie,
Thanks..So nice to see you again.. I've been watching the progress on you wonderful large studio. You are so fortunate to have the woods floors.

    >Donna,
thank you for your kind words. The painting is only 14"x20". I haven't attempted a full sheet yet. Plus I didn't want to frame that size:o)

    >Padmaja,
I appreciate your comments. I guess an artist can't hide what is going on with them physically or emotionally!

    >Susanne,
Thanks. I'm sure you'll meet the challenge Yupo presents. My only word of caution is that it's can be addictive:O)The support stockings are a great idea. I have some from my knee surgery.

  14. Hi Jean, Thank you for your kind words. Yupo does require a whole new way to approach painting.

  15. I love your yupo painting-- the colors and textures are appealing to me... and I have your same problem standing and painting so I have a thick interlocking rubber mat to stand on... really helps.

  16. I've been browsing through your paintings and love them all but this one really steals my heart.
I carve for hours on end, sometimes throughout the whole day, standing on a concrete floor. I've been wondering why it has become painful especially at the end of the day and now you mention gel insoles and rubber mats! I have never heard of this here in South Africa but will certainly make inquiries.
