Black Gesso

'32nd Matrix'    8" x !0" acrylic on primed rag paper

Several artists have raved about the quality and many applications for Utrecht's Black Gesso. I recently bought some and decided to use it as a substitute for black acrylic paint. However, it took over my painting. I fell in love with the creamy feel of it and its opaque matte coverage. I do not know what my fascination with black has been of late. For example, my portfolio cover and the black ink of the touch drawings, (see previous posts). To my knowledge, I am not depressed. In this painting, I think it is the mystery of the color that is intrigues me. Possibly the way it ties the elements together. The negative space blends with the positive and flattens the picture plane. In any case, it is a change of pace from the watercolor paintings on Yupo and since I have retired, I am all about change of pace.

  1. Hi Eva, your black gesso feels mysterious and exciting; your portfolio cover felt the same way to me. I find the balance between light and dark to make for the most exciting artworks. Is this painted on watercolor paper? Do you still show your work, especially now that you have changed your pace?

  2. I'm enjoying darker darks now too, and I doubt I'm depressed. I like the richness and the depth of the darks.

  3. wow---I really love this! I guess I am a real sucker for numbers/numerals....they add to the mystery. I love the dark colors and I like wondering....why 32? Beautiful work.

  6. >Robin, thanks, the painting is on rag paper that I primed.I haven't shown my work, other than the internet, since the market crashed and for health reasons.

    >Leslie, maybe it is a sign of the times. Thanks for commenting

    >Celeste, Thanks for joining my blog and your comments. The number was chosen just for the feel of it. The name 'Matrix' was chosen because one of the definitions of the word seemed to describe the painting.

    >Jbkrost. Wow! and and thank you!

    >Hallie, Thanks and anyone that can paint with cigarette filters will certainly do an outstanding job with blk gesso. Go for it!

  8. Hi Mark, Thanks for the thumbs up. No metallics, but an alien muse may have helped paint it :O)

  13. This piece has great depth...a place to walk into and wander about. I have been enjoying the opaque quality of house paint mixed with my glazes. The places out materials take us is fascinating!

  14. Thanks for your comments.I haven't tried house paint in years. I think the fact that it dried so differently was a problem for me.
