Digital Oils and Guilt

I am still trying to improve my technique painting digitally in Photoshop CS6. This recent painting was from a picture I took with my cheap cell phone. No, my cell phone isn't an iPhone, which is luxury I can't afford. The quality of the cell phone picture really isn't that important.  I am not always interested in too much detail and try to create a more painterly look. The downside is it is getting harder for me to pull out my actual brushes and paint. I have become addicted to turning on my computer, with a cup of coffee in hand, still in my pajamas, and start painting.

All of this is because of the Wacom Intuos5 tablet I bought earlier this year. I feel the need to justify the cost by using it as much as possible. Guilt is a constant trip I go on since I retired. Every penny I spend that isn't a necessity give me as much guilt as it does pleasure. Gone are the days when every art related thing I bought was an investment that paid off in my art business and was also a tax deduction. I keep telling myself I will created something I feel happy enough with to market. I know it's the same song a lot of other artists, photographers, writers, etc. are singing. I often wish I was like the people who put everything they do on the market no matter how poor it is. Of course what I post on my blog doesn't count! LOL

    1. Thank you Padmaja. The softness of this painting is due to the poor quality photo I used for my model. I tried to paint what I saw with some rearranging some elements and color.

    1. You are so kind and welcome to my blog. I don't post as much as I used to, but I do try to cover all sorts of subjects. I am the typical "Jack of all trades and master of none"
If you can afford to upgrade to CS6 I highly recommend it.It has the mixer brushes which started in CS5. That is what I use for my paintings.Photoshop is getting more like Painter every year.Of course I am not sure an Ipad would have enough resources to run the mixer brushes.I had to add ram to my computer to use these brushes correctly and they still lag at times.

  7. Love the painting, Eva! I admire the fact that you have gone digital...well done. The work is lovely and I'm glad that you overcame your guilt and made the investment. It can't be bad if you are happy!!

  8. Thanks Deb. I still love the real thing. As you know in your class I painted with so much detail, you thought it was a photo. LOL. If I tried this type of soft painting with oils I would have mud! As I try to make the digital paint look more like actual oil paint I am learning a lot that I hope I can apply to my real painting. Does that make sense?

    1. Yes, it does. I think you underestimate your oil painting abilities...your work is fabulous! I truly did think your oil painting of the glass was a photo!!!
