Do you need to calibrate your monitor?
I have been dragging my feet on creating a new website, but I think I am almost finished. However, when I checked the site’s appearance on my other computers, I was shocked at the difference. Two of my computers have LCD monitors and one has an old phosphorus monitor. Obviously, I needed to calibrate them, as I could not see the subtle harlequin pattern, shown above, on the LCD’s. I tried the calibration that came with my computer, but it did not work with all of them. I found this post on Flicker that really helped me. http://www.flickr.com/photos/daveward/262020865/. If you have any doubt about your monitor's calibration, I highly recommend that you read Dave Ward’s entire post and the comments as it has some great sites for monitor calibration.
I guess the photo is supposed to be black??
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you're chipping away.
Well... upon closer exam, it does have some blocks of color. But.. at first glance, I thought it was all black. I guess cataract surgery paid off. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Doug, good to see you here again. Thanks for commenting. The pattern looks black if your monitor is not calibrated correctly. Glad your cataract surgery was successful. Did you check the link to Dave's test? It's really hard to see the circle in the rectangle.
ReplyDeletethank you for this link-- I have been thinking about my monitor and printer not being in sync for some time-- and I do think they both need to calibrated.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Donna. Yes, I now understand why my printer didn't match my monitor, even with the Photoshop printing profile I use.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I really need to calibrate my monitor and I didn't know how.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I was able to help. Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteVery helpful post Eva. I have been aware of the problem for years but haven't done anything about it. Recently I created a disc of images and then viewed it on my computer, on our TV screen and my husbands computer. All were widely different. My computer displays very dull images but if I brignten them they are glaring on my husbands computer. When sending images on a disc to apply to shows it makes me wonder how they are seeing the work because it depends on what monitor they are using and how it's calibrated.
ReplyDeleteThank you Suzanne, for stopping by and commenting. Yes, I too have had a problem creating disc of my work for shows. I have a digital projector and I use it to check my images, but I doubt if every show jury uses projectors. I've judged a few shows and we used computer monitors.
